“Sex scenes are not about exchanging bodily fluids – they’re about exchanging emotions …”
This is a great short book about the ins and outs of writing sex scenes by the author of several series of historical romances that feature, well, lots of evocative sex scenes. I’ve read only one of her novels (Outlander), and I understand why it does so well (still) decades after it was first published. This handy little guide-book (I got it on Kindle for $2.99 and read it in about two hours) is great reading – at least half, if not more, of the book, is fleshed out by representative sex scenes from one or more of her books, and she brings her points to vivid light in those samples. I think what I like best about both her novels’ sex scenes and this guidebook is her advice (which I reiterate here below): Sex scenes are not about exchanging bodily fluids, they are about exchanging emotions.
In short, porn is about body parts doing things to other body parts while exchanging bodily fluids – literary sex scenes are about emotional people exchanging emotions with other emotional people.
VERY GOOD BOOK, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
